Preventing Facial Injuries

Plainfield Sports Dentistry Facial injuries occur all too often in the New Brunswick area. Little Leaguers get hit by inside pitches, construction workers suffer falls and other accidents at the worksite, and local motorists sustain injuries in collisions every single day. Accidents at home can also result in serious injury to the face.

Serious facial injuries can affect the victim’s ability to eat, breathe, and speak. Because of the essential physical processes at risk, a person who has suffered a facial injury should receive emergency dental care as soon as possible. Injuries to the mouth are treated by general dentists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

At Advanced Dentistry, we strongly advocate the use of protective equipment for every type of sport, whether it is a team sport or individual activity. Call us at 732-564-6037 for mouthguard recommendations regarding your (or your child’s) specific sport.

Likewise, the New Brunswick workplace injury rate can be reduced with increased use of appropriate protective equipment and adherence to safety procedures. With respect to motor vehicle injuries, the following instructions bear repetition: Wear your seatbelt and don’t send or read text messages while driving!

If you have suffered a recent dental emergency or injury to your face, mouth or jaw, schedule a dental consultation with Dr. Ralph Reilly of Advanced Dentistry. If you are having dental problems (functional or aesthetic) due to an untreated past injury, I can also develop an effective cosmetic dental treatment plan.

My office is located at 7 Greenbrook Rd in Middlesex NJ.

Keep Teeth Healthy During Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, your oral health may be the last thing on your mind. However, many Warren NJ women experience an increase in dental problems during pregnancy. This general dentistry article contains important information for expectant Warren NJ mothers and those planning to become pregnant.

Dr. Ralph Reilly recommends having a thorough holistic dentistry exam and cleaning early in your pregnancy. Lying in a dentist’s chair can be uncomfortable during the last trimester. A professional cleaning performed by one of the skilled dental hygienists at Advanced Dentistry, along with diligent brushing and flossing, helps prevent gum disease and related problems that are often triggered by hormonal changes. The American Dental Association has found a positive correlation between periodontal disease and preterm deliveries and low birth weight.

If you are currently pregnant and have sore, swollen or bleeding gums, schedule an appointment today by calling 732-564-6037. Once the baby is here, it will probably be harder for you to make time for a restorative dentistry visit.

If you receive dental treatment at Advanced Dentistry during your pregnancy, be sure to inform Dr. Ralph Reilly that you are expecting. This will affect decisions about X-rays, pain relievers, antibiotics, and sedation dentistry.

Hormonal changes cause an increase in plaque production which can lead to decay. If you are eating many small meals during the day, take care to brush after eating. If you avoid sweet snacks, your teeth will be less likely to develop cavities.

Remember, your oral care, nutrition and lifestyle affect your baby. It is essential that you eat a healthy diet with a variety of foods. A poor diet can harm your baby’s tooth and bone development. Be sure to get enough calcium, iron, vitamins A, D and C, protein, and phosphorus. Your Warren NJ Ob/Gyn can give you specific recommendations for your age, height, weight and medical conditions.

At Advanced Dentistry, we take special care of our clients who are expecting.

Do You Have Sore Gums?

Affordable Middlesex Dentistry Every New Brunswick dentistry patient’s mouth provides a cozy home for over 600 types of bacteria. If you are diligent about dental hygiene and have healthy gums, these microbes usually don’t affect your health. However, if you have gum disease, bacteria can enter your bloodstream through your gums and cause problems.

Gingivitis is the term for the mild gum disease. At Advanced Dentistry, we routinely discover gingivitis in New Brunswick clients who are not even aware they have the condition.

The first signs of gingivitis are swollen, sore gums.

It is important for our New Brunswick dental patients to understand that it is not normal for gums to bleed when they are brushed or flossed. If you haven’t had an oral examination in a while and live in the New Brunswick area, call Advanced Dentistry at 732-564-6037. Dr. Ralph Reilly thoroughly exams teeth and gums and takes time to discuss the results and recommendations with each general dentistry patient.

Advanced Dentistry is a full-service dental practice at 7 Greenbrook Rd, Middlesex NJ. We provide comprehensive general and cosmetic dentistry for clients who live in New Brunswick and the nearby communities.

During your dentist consultation, we can discuss any cosmetic or restorative procedures in which you are interested. Some of the New Brunswick procedures that we use to create perfect smiles are porcelain veneers, orthodontics, dental implants and tooth bleaching. Our hygienists are skilled professionals who perform the ultimate in dental deep-cleanings.

Oral health and overall health go hand in hand. Schedule a dental consultation today by calling 732-564-6037 or visiting us online at http://advanceddentistry.net/.

Advanced Dentistry Tooth Tips For Traveling

Advanced Dentistry Tooth Tips For Traveling

If you live in the Bridgewater NJ area and are planning to take a vacation or business trip soon, I recommend you coordinate your dental care with your travel schedule. It’s always a good idea to have a checkup with your Bridgewater NJ holistic dentist prior to leaving on long vacations, especially if your trip is taking you to developing areas without good dental care options. This quick checkup will help you be sure that your mouth is ready to travel.

More importantly, if you have any cosmetic dental procedures scheduled before you leave, discuss it with your Bridgewater NJ dentist. A large number of dental procedures are actually surgical procedures. This means that your body will need more time to heal than you may realize.

Also, if you’re leaving the Bridgewater NJ area by plane, you should be aware that changes in the cabin pressure of the airplane may cause tooth pain or discomfort for patients who have just had oral surgery. In addition, make sure you are aware of any necessary follow-up appointments with your Bridgewater NJ dentist or orthodontist before you schedule a vacation.

I’m Dr. Ralph Reilly and I want Bridgewater NJ residents to be informed about their dental care. My dental practice offers:

If you are looking for caring general dentistry or quality cosmetic dentistry in Bridgewater NJ or the surrounding areas, please call us today and let our world class staff take care of you.

A New Reason To Eat More Fish In Bridgewater NJ

Plainfield Family Dentists Hello Bridgewater NJ  dental blog visitors, welcome to the Advanced Dentistry blog. I am Dr. Ralph Reilly.

I came across an interesting general dentistry article on the Web MD Health News site the other day. The article is entitled ‘Fatty Fish, Nuts May Prevent Gum Disease.’ Author Jennifer Warner explains that a recent study links diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) with a lower risk of periodontitis.

Gum disease is a common dental issue for many Bridgewater NJ  folks. When gum tissue pulls away from a tooth, it forms a pocket. (You know what they say about Nature abhorring a vacuum.) This pocket is a warm, moist place for bacteria to flourish. If periodontal disease goes untreated, the tooth and jaw bone are at risk. During dental examinations, I carefully measure gumline pockets and examine all teeth for gum disease.

“Researchers found that people whose diets were rich in PUFAs were as much as 30 percent less likely to have gum disease than those who ate little or none of this type of fat.”

Foods high in PUFAs include salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, sardines, herring. Oils high in PUFAs include safflower oil, soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, and margarines made with the previously mentioned oils. Almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and flax seeds are high PUFA nuts/seeds.

I don’t know many families in Bridgewater NJ  that regularly eat mackerel and herring. Maybe some of us could benefit from becoming more adventurous when it comes to seafood.

The possible prevention of gum disease is not the only reason to eat high PUFA foods. These foods pack a nutritional punch and have myriad health benefits. The next time you are stocking up at the Bridgewater NJ Costco, you may want to add some salmon and walnuts to your list.

It is important to understand that diet alone will not be a periodontal treatment or prevent gum disease, however it may be an additional tool for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

If you have not been to your Bridgewater NJ dentist in a while, I urge you to schedule an examination and cleaning today. We are currently taking new Bridgewater NJ dental clients at Advanced Dentistry.

If you are interested in teeth whitening, smile makeovers, tooth-colored fillings or invisible braces, call us today to schedule an appointment.

Tooth Brushing Basics For Healthy Smiles In Middlesex NJ

Filed under: Oral Health — Tags: , , — Advanced Dentistry NJ @ 1:50 pm

Middlesex Teeth Bleaching Why should everyone in Middlesex NJ brush at least twice a day? Let’s take a look at why this is so important.

Brushing and flossing is the best way to prevent decay.

Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and carefully flossing removes the food from our teeth and inhibits the build up of plaque. If we let food stay on our teeth, the starches in the food will mix with the plaque. This nasty mixture forms an acid which immediately starts drilling into the enamel to form cavities. Brushing can’t get all the spaces between your teeth, so you’ve got to floss also.

Brushing and flossing keeps gums and bone healthy.

If you let gum disease go untreated, you can lose teeth that are cavity-free!

The progression of gum disease (gingivitis) goes like this:

  1. Plaque build-up irritates gums.
  2. Irritated gums pull away from teeth.
  3. Bacteria multiplies in the spaces between the gum and tooth.
  4. The bone holding the tooth is eaten by the bacteria.
  5. Say goodbye to the tooth.

The good news is that gingivitis can be reversed if detected early. This is why it’s so important to visit your dentist regularly.

Call holistic dentist Dr. Ralph Reilly at Advanced Dentistry 732-564-6037 to schedule a gum disease evaluation at our Middlesex NJ office. If you are in need of cosmetic dentistry, we have a comprehensive menu of services. Visit our website to learn more: http://www.advanceddentistry.net/.

Energy Drink Warning For Bridgewater NJ

Bridgewater Smile Redesign Hello. I’m Dr. Ralph Reilly.

Welcome to my Bridgewater NJ dental blog. Today’s topic is energy drinks and the damage they can cause to your teeth. I am seeing more and more Bridgewater NJ  teens and adults with tooth enamel erosion caused by frequent consumption of sport drinks.

Most of these Bridgewater NJ cosmetic dentistry patients take good care of their teeth, brush and flush, and come into Advanced Dentistry for a twice-yearly exam and deep cleaning. But guess what? If you drink energy drinks regularly, your enamel can erode even if you practice immaculate oral hygiene.

Energy drinks like Red Bull, Rock Star, and Monster are a cocktail of powerful acids and other enamel-eroding substances. Most of them contain citric acid, fruit juices, loads of sugar, and a potent chemical that gives them their bright fluorescent color.

Perhaps, like myself, you have often noticed young people walking out of Bridgewater NJ convenience stores swigging 32-ounce energy drinks. I am concerned that Bridgewater NJ teens do not understand the serious dental consequences of frequent acid baths.

The following is from ABC Sports:

“Sports drinks are increasingly damaging the teeth of professional and recreational athletes, one of Australia’s top sports dentists has warned. Dr. Brett Dorney says he has witnessed a huge increase in dental erosion since the Sidney Olympics, when he was the event’s deputy director of dental services.”

Here is an excerpt from a recent CNN Story:

“Researchers at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry found the energy drinks and sports drinks eroded the enamel more than soda and fruit juices.”

I need to add the caveat that soda and fruit juices also contain acids that can damage teeth.

If your teeth have enamel erosion, whatever the cause, we can restore your smile with advanced cosmetic dentistry. Crowns, porcelain veneers, inlays and onlays can correct both structural and cosmetic problems.

Our phone number is 732-564-6037. If you are interested in re-designing your smile, come in for an exam and consultation. With cutting-edge cosmetic dentistry, as well as holistic treatment, we can repair acid-damaged teeth and dramatically increase your face value.

Cavity Fighting Chewing Gum For Our Middlesex NJ Patients?

Plainfield Oral Dentistry I’m Dr. Ralph Reilly DMD of Advanced Dentistry in Middlesex NJ. My cosmetic dentistry clients often ask me if chewing xylitol gum is an effective substitute for tooth brushing and regular Middlesex NJ dental exams.

Before I answer that question, let me tell you a little bit about xylitol:

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that was first discovered in birch tree bark but is also found in many fruits and vegetables. Unlike most other sweeteners (natural or synthetic), xylitol is actually good for your teeth. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that xylitol prevents the growth of the bacteria that initiates decay. It also reduces plaque and strengthens tooth enamel.

Xylitol has other benefits, as well. Because it is low on the glycemic index, many of my Middlesex NJ diabetic patients enjoy it as a healthy alternative to sugar. If my Middlesex NJ sedation dentistry patients complain about frequent dry mouth, I recommend Xylitol gum or mints to stimulate saliva production without promoting tooth decay.

Now, back to the golden question. Is xylitol gum just as effective as brushing your teeth and seeing your Middlesex NJ holistic dentist regularly? Absolutely not! If you cannot brush your teeth after a meal, chewing xylitol gum for five or ten minutes is probably a good idea. However, you should still brush your teeth thoroughly (with a soft brush) after meals and get twice-yearly exams and oral dentistry deep cleanings at your Middlesex NJ laser dentistry clinic.

At Advanced Dentistry, our goal is to keep your smile healthy and beautiful for life by preventing dental problems before they start. If you postpone Middlesex NJ dental visits until you feel pain, you risk losing teeth and most certainly will require more extensive treatment than if the problem was caught earlier. Is it time for a dental exam? Call us at 732-564-6037 to book an appointment. Our world class team is waiting to take care of all your dental needs.

Advanced Dentistry Guide To Healthy Tooth Enamel

Advanced Dentistry Guide To Healthy Tooth Enamel

Here at Advanced Dentistry, we want your teeth to last a lifetime! Tooth enamel is one of the hardest parts of the body, but it is non-renewable so it is important not to not neglect or abuse our teeth. Daily teeth and gum care is the best way to protect tooth enamel.

Even though every Bridgewater NJ drug store carries hard bristle brushes, we recommend brushing with a soft brush after every meal to gently brush away acid. Scrub too hard, and you can erode enamel. It is ideal to brush immediately after eating, but brushing within 60 minutes of a meal has benefits. The quicker you remove food from your teeth, the better it is for your enamel.

Flossing regularly is also important to keep gums healthy. Whether the food is on tooth surfaces, or hidden in between, it is not doing your enamel any good.

Dr. Ralph Reilly recommends a checkup and thorough cleaning every six months. Our office uses laser dentistry as a way to detect decay. Our skilled hygienists remove tartar, a substance that attracts plaque to the surface of the teeth and can weaken the teeth’s structures. Regular checkups prevent problems and save you money on expensive restorations down the road.

Remember: don’t use your teeth for opening packages! Keep scissors and bottle openers handy. At Advanced Dentistry, we see damaged teeth and dental work as a result of patients using their teeth as tools. Biting down on something too hard, like ice or hard candy can also damage enamel.

Attention Bridgewater NJ athletes: be sure to use a mouthguard for team, contact, and recreational sports.

Teeth grinding is also a common dental threat. Be careful not to grind teeth, this can not only wear away enamel but also pave ways for cavities to get in. If you grind your teeth while you are sleeping, make an appointment to be fitted for a night guard. Your enamel will thank you. (Mouth guards can also be used as a way to alleviate snoring associated with sleep apnea).

Lastly, remember: drink water. Coffee, sports drinks, soda, wine, and tea all contain a lot of acid or sugar, and in some cases both. Cut back, or at least use a straw. These drinks cause a lot of tooth decay for non-water drinkers in Bridgewater NJ.

We hope you find these Advanced Dentistry tips helpful. For more information on dental care, or to schedule an appointment, contact our Bridgewater NJ cosmetic dentist office today at 732-564-6037!
